Turning Point in AICUF

The declaration made by the student leaders in the National Council meeting held in Poonamallee, in 1971, ie.  “We were born in an unjust world; We will leave it as we have found it,” was a turning point in the history of AICUF.  Following that, the movement began to focus its attention towards the oppressed sections of our society. It began to look at the problems of our country from the perspective of the poor.  From then on, it began to organise  programmes in such a way that would instill critical thinking in the minds of the student community – the would be leaders.

AICUF Constitution - A focused vision

In 1989, AICUF evolved a constitution for itself.  The major break through of the Constitution was, to give autonomy to all the states which were under fold of AICUF.Further, in the same year the National council meeting  proclaimed that Dalits, Tribals and Women were its target groups and the IV National Convention in 1999 added the Refugees in the list of target groups for all its activities.  Indeed, it was a decision made after a serious analysis of the situation prevailed then.  Indeed, that was a timely decision - a decision that made a turning point in the history of AICUF. Following  the proclamation made by the National Council in 1989, Tamil Nadu began to focus its attention towards women dalits and refugees along with its regular concentration on General students.

Programmes

Now in  Tamilnadu AICUF, Programmes are organised at four levels ie. 1) at  the unit level 2) at the zonal level, 3) at the regional level and 4) at the State level.  As mentioned earlier, all the programmes are organised  (decided and executed) by student leaders. The role of the advisors is to make them understand the reality around them.  Exposure programmes find a prominent place in AICUF.  In fact, they serve as basis, for all other programmes. Some of the exposure programmes usually conducted are the following:  Dalit reality exposure, Village reality exposure, Fishermen reality exposure, Environment exposure, Slum exposure, Refugee exposure etc.
