KARNATAKA
History
The AICUF in Karnataka has a
long tradition of selfless service. Right from its inception, AICUF has played a
major role in moulding young Catholic leaders in all walks of life. A glimpse of
their achievements would reveal its progress in its commitment.
1948
On 7th November, A
Regional Conference of the SICUF was held at Mount Carmel College, Bangalore,
under the presidentship of Rev. Fr.
P. Ambrose, OFM, Rev. Fr. M. Antoine, the Principal, outlined the activities of
this unit of federation.
On 31st July, the
inaugural meeting of the CSU was held at Aloysius College, Mangalore.

1959
CSU unit was inaugurated at St.
Aloysius College, Mangalore. More than four hundred students, including the
members of other CSU units of Mangalore, attend the meeting.
1971
A survey was under taken by the
St. Joseph’s Arts and Sciency College, Bangalore, on the conditions of rag
pickers and dust bin dwellers.
…a long gap in terms of AICUF
activities… after a long gap, AICUF is revived in Karnataka. The persons who
have taken immense efforts to build up AICUF in Karnataka are Fr. Ambrose Pinto,
Fr. Daniel, Fr. Francis D’ Almeida, Fr. Swebert D’ Silva and Mr. Paul
Newman.

1992
December – 10,000 Christian
students formed a human chain against the demolition of Babri Masjid.
All the units of the Catholic
Students Associations and AICUF of the Bangalore citycolleges formed a common
organization, called Bangalore Catholic Students’ Association (BACSA).
1996
BACSA which had applied for
affiliation in the year 1995, was represented in the AICUF National Council
1996. The Council gave consent to the affiliation of BACSA.

1998
On 25th – 30th
May – a five day national seminar on ‘Refugees and Displacement’ was held
at ISI, Bangalore. The seminar focused on the changing scenario of refugees in
the context of displacement, globalisation and attempted to make the students
aware of the realities. It was organized by UNHCR, JRS and AICUF.
2000-2001

State Convention organised by Bangalore Region

A work camp organised at St. Aloysius Boys home, Nehru Nagar

Together
with the solidarity groups observed anit-nuclearisation day

AICUF organised a candle light vigil in sympathy of the American Victims of
Terrorism and in solidarity with the people of Afghan and Middle East.

Mangalore region organised a one-day exposure camp at Pavoor

Two day state convention on ‘Higher Education Haunting challenges and possible
solutions’.
2002-2003

Joined hands with NAPM against the Govt. stand against ‘Fisher Rights’
-
Rural Exposure Camp held from 8th to 10th September 2002 at REDS.

Women’s Commission Meeting held on 22nd to 24th November 2002 at REDS, Tumkur.
